Use ColoredEye with VoiceOver

Updated

ColoredEye works with VoiceOver. When VoiceOver is on, everything ColoredEye says goes through VoiceOver, in your VoiceOver voice and speaking rate, and ColoredEye's own voice stays quiet so the two never talk over each other.

What you hear

  • Color names. With Announce Colors on, VoiceOver announces the name each time it changes. On the live camera, the name is checked every 3 seconds. On a frozen picture, it's announced when the picture stops moving. The name is spoken without the basic color in brackets.
  • What a tap did. For example Frozen. Drag or zoom to read another spot., Live camera, Copied, or White balance set for this light.
  • Results. Compare verdicts such as Close — a bit redder, and Find steps such as Match 2 of 7.

With Announce Colors off, names aren't announced. Swipe to the color card to read the current name and values whenever you like. See turn spoken color names on or off.

The camera screen, by area

Top bar:

  • Camera light, with the state On or Off.
  • White balance, with the state Automatic or Set for this light.
  • ColoredEye, a heading in the middle.
  • Compare colors, with the state On or Off.
  • Settings.

Color card:

  • The color name, for example Teal (Green), or a prompt such as Point the camera at a color when there's no reading yet.
  • Frozen, while a picture is frozen.
  • The values, for example Hex 008080, RGB 0, 128, 128.
  • Copy color values.
  • Find matches, while a picture is frozen.

Middle of the screen:

  • Camera preview, on the live camera.
  • Notes just below the crosshair, when they apply: the Compare or Find result, and Low light. Readings may be off.

Bottom bar:

  • Choose photo.
  • Freeze on the live camera, or Return to live camera while frozen.
  • Flip camera on the live camera, or Object colors while frozen.

Tips for VoiceOver users

  • Aim with the live camera, then double-tap Freeze to hold what's under the crosshair. Turn on Tap to Freeze in Settings › Photos to freeze by double-tapping Camera preview too.
  • To list every color of an object, freeze, then double-tap Object colors. See see all the colors in an object.
  • To match one thing against another, use Compare. Your device also gives a tap you can feel for each verdict.
  • To find every area of one color, double-tap Find matches, then use Previous match and Next match to move the picture from one match to the next. VoiceOver moves to the Find card when Find starts. See find a color in a picture.
  • With Reduce Motion on, Find moves to each match without animating.

Larger text

At the largest accessibility text sizes, the color card runs the full width of the screen, just above the bottom bar, so the name can be as large as possible. Show Color in Navigation Bar has no effect at these sizes.
