Back up to a drive or a share connected in Finder

Updated

If your backups go to an external drive, or to a shared folder you've already connected in Finder, choose the folder directly instead of connecting to a server.

  1. In setup's Destination step, or in Destination › Change…, choose Choose a Folder.
  2. Click Choose Folder….
  3. Pick the folder to keep backups in, or make a new one, then click Choose.

CloudBak tests the folder, as it does for a NAS: it checks that it can save files there, measures the write speed, and shows how much space is free.

Warnings you may see

  • This is a drive connected to this Mac, not a NAS. That works, but it must be connected for backups to run. Keep the drive connected when backups are due.
  • This folder is on this Mac's own disk, so it won't protect your files if the Mac fails. Choose a folder on another drive or a NAS instead.

A share connected in Finder

When you choose a folder on a share you connected in Finder, macOS usually tells CloudBak the share's address, so CloudBak can connect to it again by itself if it disconnects.

If it can't, CloudBak says: This share doesn't say how to connect to it again, so a backup that loses it waits for you to reconnect it in Finder. To have CloudBak reconnect by itself, use Connect to Server instead. See Connect to your NAS.

If the drive is disconnected

Connect the drive again. CloudBak checks again whenever a drive comes or goes. See If your NAS or drive disconnects.
